“ | Flew into Skegness in our DR400 on Wednesday 4 July to take the greyhounds to meet some of their friends on holiday at Butlin’s across the road. The grass strip is on the edge of a caravan/camping/water-park site and was very easy to spot and is exceptionally well maintained with one of the smoothest grass strips I have been on for a while. There was no one present on our arrival (we had ‘PPR’d’ the previous Sunday) and we just made blind calls. The landing fee was paid at the campsite office and at £7.00 was a snip! There is a pub/café on site where we met our friends and which did decent food and coffee at a reasonable price.
Well worth a visit and, from previous visits, ‘Skeggy’ is about an hour’s walk away if you fancy a stroll. Airfield parking was on grass and had plenty of space. No fuel available on site and that made the trip from Blackpool pretty much at our maximum return range, but if this was an issue, several airfields (Wickenby, North Coates, and Humberside) are close by.
Nice trip to a nice airfield which is well kept and inexpensive. ” |
“ | Pooped over from East Kirkby and saw the windmills at sea from 20 miles away so easily found the town but couldn't find the airfield at first. Was looking too far north of the town. Once found it was easy. If on Rwy 21 aim for the roller coaster in the middle of the town (one of the highest objects) turn South to be greeted by Rwy 21. Nice little strip and well kept. Short 15 min walk to the front through the adjacent caravan park. The town isn't my cup of tea but it was to visit briefly ” |
“ | Visited on 29th July in Eurostar, airfield in a wonderful location and easy to find, as mentioned earlier runway tended to be a bit bumpy but have landed on worse. The airfield was very well maintained and was made most welcome by the staff on duty. The cafe which is situated close by supplied some very nice sandwiches at a reasonable price, will certainly visit again when down that area. ” |
“ | Flew to Skeggy in my PA28, landed on the crosswind runway (650m) which was quite bumpy but no worse than many licensed airfields. Since it was midweek the radio was unmanned, so made traffic calls. Got the local QNH from Conningsby who provide LARS for the area and were very efficient and helpful.
There was no one about, so we made our way across the expanse of caravans to the site reception where we paid the very reasonable landing fee of £7. It's quite a long way, past a couple of toilet and shower blocks. If you can't find it, just ask anyone who happens to be around, it's a very friendly place.
There was no need to book out, so after looking at the 2 windsocks, we decided to depart on the longer main (890m) runway, even though it was 90 degrees crosswind. The surface was similar to the shorter runway, but serviceable enough. Departure to the north was uneventful except that the climb out is obstructed by the roller coaster at Fantasy Island, requiring a 20 degree left turn as soon as possible.
This airfield is very much open for business and is well worth a visit. Tell me another airfield with a massive Butlins within walking distance!

“ | Excellent grass runway, nice and long. PA28 £7.00. ” |
“ | Flew into Skegness on Friday 19th August. It was easy enough to find – look for the lake in the middle of the sea of caravans and the strips are just to the east and south! The strips were fairly smooth, well mown and not at all damp, which suggests good drainage bearing in mind the rain we had had recently.
We got a very friendly welcome and a guide to the hangar which was just as well as it wouldn’t have been obvious otherwise, due to the building work taking place! The landing fee of just £7.00 was very reasonable and it really was only a 10 minute walk to the beach. The dogs loved the walk, so it enters our “good dog walk location” list. The loos on the caravan site were available to us, (same ownership) and were excellent. The pub/café at the site is also available to airfield users and, although we didn’t use them, they looked very family friendly, if you like that kind of thing.
The service from Leeds, Doncaster, Waddington and Coningsby ATCs on the way in, (we came from Blackpool), were excellent as always.

“ | Took a trip to Skegness on 25th April 2011 with the family in a PA28 from Nottingham. Sunny but very windy. Very, very well maintained, short, very smooth grass runways. Situated close to the sea we were given a friendly welcome and mini Easter eggs for our four year old daugter (whose first flight it was ). With directions to front we had fish chips before heading home. Well worth a trip and I am sure we will head back soon. £7 to land and limited briefing facility from computer on site. ” |
“ | First visit on Sunday 10th and was very pleased with what I found. No one manning the radio but other aircraft in the circuit very helpful. Pleasant surroundings and a very reasonable £7 landing fee. Runway a bit bumpy in places but not a problem. Will be visiting again with family to make a day of it. ” |
“ | Visited Skeggy yesterday and were given the usual very friendly welcome. Runway was in excellent condition and at £7 landing fee its not out of the way at all as theres a good length of grass to keep manicured. I understand there is the purchase of a better radio system on its way for next year. As its close to a lot of ameneties its well worth a visit. ( dont forget your bucket & spade ) ” |
“ | Nice, friendly destination.
Runways were well mown and smooth.
” |
“ | A perfect destination for a daytrip or longer stay - Don and Chris were most helpful and our aircraft were safe overnight - couldn't fault the trip - we'll be back!!! ” |
“ | My wife and I flew to Skegness on Saturday afternoon. There were a couple of pilots in the circuit and one replied to my blind call. There is nothing on the airfield as such and only sign of life was an occasional aircraft taking off and landing. There were a number of microlights and GA aircrafts in the parking area. Even the landing fee is to be paid at the reception of a huge caravan site that is next to the field. The caravan site adds to the fun and entertainment on the site. We wandered around in the caravan stie and watched all the residens having good fun in the brightest of the days this year. Enjoyed lunch in the nearby pub, food there was great. Leisure parks and sea beach are nearby. Altogether, there is plenty to do around the airfield. ” |
“ | Wanted to visit Skegness for a while and managed it on Saturday. A bit concerned about bringing in a Saratoga but no problems getting in or out. Friendly welcome from Don and took the chance to have a look around. Snacks and drinks available from the Ski school or the pub at the end of the drive. Next time will bring the family and have a day on the beach. ” |
“ | I visited Skegie a couple of weeks back. The sun was shining and the fish and chips were as good as they should be. The airfield was quiet with only a couple of visitors. Even Waddo handed us over to Skegie!! ” |
“ | I visited Skegness for the first time last weekend. The airfield is easy to spot - look for the dumbell shaped lake. Both runways are in very good condition (I landed on 21 and took off on 29). Probably the friendliest club I've been to in a long time. They even phoned Elstree and radioed the en route weather to me as I departed. There is a pub about a 10 mins walk away with decent grub, and the Butlins camp is a further 10 mins walk. I had a trip down memory lane and paid the £9.50 as a day visitor. If you have kids with you they'll love it - especially the water slides. Bit different to how I remember it from 1982!
Skegness is now top of my list of favourite airfields, joint with Bembridge.
The secenery en route, by the way, is stunning. ” |
“ | Took a while for A/G to respond and I was just about to give a 'traffic' call and land anyway, when they came back to me. Very friendly and very helpful. Runways superb and easy enough to spot, just look for the huge water ski lake, the runways are right next to it. Excellent fish and chips on the beach. £7 landing fee seems v reasonable. ” |
“ | Very good runways, very friendly welcome and good, helpful, advice regarding local facilities.
We found the airfield easy to spot because the grass was cut shorter on the runways than on the adjacent ground, making the runways stand out.
An excellent sandy beach (10 minutes walk) and a vintage small gauge railway on site (operates Sundays only) make this a particularly good venue for a sunny day. Note the airfield is closed on Monday. ” |
“ | flew into Skegness yesterday 2 very good runways close to the sea ( 10 min walk ) 3 miles to town centre. friendly warm welcom. plenty of local facilities adventure parks ect. ” |
“ | Flew in to Skegness on Sunday 5th April 2009. Lovely airfield, beautifull smooth grass strip landing North - South. Not that easy to spot eventhough both S/N & E/W runways close to 1000m each! £7 landing fee, reasonable for quality of surfaces and welcome. Don was most helpfull and hopes to encourage more visitors. Didn't have time to explore but will definately visit again soon. ” |
“ | Visited Skegness yesterday, a little cautious after reading the reviews on this site although some a bit out of date now. Rang ahead for instructions, very helpful. Airfield a little hard to spot until right overhead. There is a fair bit of microlight activity around, they seem to fly up and down the beach so keep a very good lookout. Landed on 29, shortest strip, no problems, clear instructions where to park having backtracked. Only slight problem was two microlights coming in after me, the one was lining up for the wrong runway! Darren at the airfield very helpful, friendly welcome and gave advice about how to get into the town. Skegness a bit tatty, lots of amusement arcades and the like, but plently of places to eat and alright to spend a couple of hours in the sun by the sea. Would definitely go back if only for the welcome. A new runway is being prepared for next year, 2009. No problems with take off, although you do have to get in air quickly due to the close location of the campsite next door. ” |
“ | Visited Skegness today with 3 passengers in our PA28, friendly welcome, nice clear information on the telephone PPR and responsive AG radio, easy to spot the runways, we landed on 22 the longest runway. BEWARE runway 22 it is VERY bumpy, I do most of my flying from grass runways being based at little gransden, but this is the bumpiest I have ever used, we were launched in to the air over a bump on takeoff at 60mph - not ideal in a laden PA28 !!. A 15 minute walk to a great beach, plenty of places to get food on the way, the kids loved it !. I would go back, but only after assurances that some of the worst bumps in the runway had been smoothed over. ” |
“ | Skegness is a landing strip, not even really an airfield. That said its a good one with some of the most helpful engineers. the town itself may not be to everyone's taste, I hated it. The runways are quite hard to spot initially but are in good nick and there is plently of parking. ” |
“ | Visited Skegness today, two nice grass runways, generally good surface. Very friendly, 6 pounds landing fee. Airfield is right next to a large caravan park with shop and pub a 5 min stroll through the caravan park. Circuits in a Microlight are a little awkard due to to towns and recreation areas. Just wish we could have made a day of it and gone for a paddle, but we had to get back! ” |
