Very helpful & friendly welcome, flew in on Sunday 21/08/11 - landing fee £33 for SR22 - including 2 hours parking & any approach fee.

Public terminal has bar / coffee shop & retaurant with usual airport food - which was quite acceptable.

  • Quality and value of food / drink: 4
  • Standard of runway: 5
  • Landing fee / handling charges: 4
  • ATC / AFIS / A/G service: 5
  • Friendliness of welcome: 5
  • GA pilot briefing facilities: 4

I flew into Southampton on Sunday 6th September 2009 in a PA28 (G-JCAS).

The whole experience was superb from start to finish and they could not have been more helpful.

The ops staff were aggrieved about the negative press they get and commented that given time and some flexibility on behalf of the pilot they will try to accommodate everyone. I couldn't agree more. Well done EGHI!

Flew into southampton today in a hired PA28, I have to admit I was unsure of the reception I would get at EGHI, having heard a lot of negative things about their attitude to GA. However they could not have been more helpful and accomodating. I called for PPR the day before and they were very welcoming, ATC were excellent and on arrival I went to the briefing room where I was met by Ops staff ready with GENDEC for me to complete (most airports forget IOM flights have to complete this). Landing fee and parking was not cheap at £42 plus VAT, but for the facilities you get at EGHI I suppose it is reasonable. Even though I was only in a PA28 I was treated by ATC as a much bigger aircraft which did inflate my ego a little bit!!! Excellent experience and I would not hesitate to visit again.

I must admit that I had my tongue firmly in cheek when I rang flight handling at Southampton to see if they would accept a PA28 Cherokee 140 with parking for 6 hours on a Saturday morning. To my surprise they couldnt have been more friendly or helpful, gave me a PPR number and that was that. I filed my flight plan and off I went. The ATC were very friendly, the ground staff were incredibly helpful and the whole experience was faultless. The landling fee and parking came to about £50.00 but what do you expect when you have a stand to yourself that could accomodate a 737, wish I had had my camera. Weather and briefing were available from the watch room who again couldnt do enough to help. Only tip to other GA pilots is brush up on your marshalling signals, I had forgotten most of mine, thanks to the young trainee marshaller for the nods and directions. I have heard lots of people say that Southampton were totally uninterested in GA and were very unfriendly to any aircraft that wasnt full of passengers, but all I can say is that if all airfields and airports were this friendly then the world of GA would be a much nicer place. Thanks to all those working at Southampton on Saturday 9th May you made a great day.

I have been flying out of Southampton Airport for 2.5 years now with Solent Flight, a highly professional flying school operating a fleet of PA-28s (Warriors, Archers and Arrows). Southampton ATC are mostly tolerant and forgiving, despite the airport being Class D airspace. There is limited parking, and although there is a restaurant in the main terminal building, the atmosphere is "commercial" and not especially GA friendly, as you might expect at an international airport. Fast regular links via the Parkway train station into Southampton city centre, journey takes about 10 minutes.

I paid a brief visit today to Southampton. My last visit was some eighteen months ago. Whilst PPR is essential the BAA ground staff were very helpful, courteous and efficient. The landing fee for a Cherokee Six was approximately £22 with free parking for up to two hours.(This is settled in the Airport Fire Service Watch room which is operated by BAA - be careful not to touch any red buttons there!)
