Southend Airport (EGMC)

Submitted by: Tom Clark

Airport is H24, but for flights between 2300-0630 local, PPR from ATC (01702 538420), otherwise just freecall inbound on 130.775, ideally with at least 20 miles to run. Southend is Mode-S radar equipped, so please have your transponder switched on with Mode-C when in the area (if you have one!).

Fuel is available H24 also. GA parking will usually be on the North Apron

The FBO that GA use is located in the old terminal (by the south apron stands).

The Flight Briefing Office hours are 0830-1830 (unless altered by NOTAM) and is co-located with an H24 security point that you will need to pass through to gain airside access. A Hi-viz jacket is required whilst airside.

Executive Handling is required for aircraft of MTWA 2700kg or more.

The passenger terminal along the eastern boundary has a café, ATM, Bureau de change as well as car-hire desks. Immediately adjacent to this is  the railway station with frequent services to London Liverpool Street, via Stratford, and to Southend in the other direction. The station is approximately a 600m walk from the FBO.

Local buses are available from the road outside the airport, and the X30 coach linking to Stansted and Chelmsford picks up from the passenger terminal.

There is a Stobart Air operated Hotel close to the FBO: Holiday Inn with a 5th restaurant overlooking the apron and runway. A McDonalds fast-food restaurant is adjacent to the airport entrance.

All car-parking is chargeable.

Southend Airport accepts genuine emergency and precautionary diversions without charge per CAA CAP 667 9.2 (c) recommendations.

11 Feb 11: Important: Weekend closures in March

    Tom Clark - Southend

    All – For Info:

Please note that Southend Airport will be subject to 3 long weekend closures in March when the airport will not be available to any traffic, as follows:

    March 4th 1200 to 7th 1200

    March 11th 1200 to 14th 1200

    March 18th 1200 to 21st 1200

ATC will continue to offer LARS 0900-1800 .

Please also note that Southend Airport will be closed overnight from 2000-0800 commencing 14th February, for minimum 6 weeks.

During these closures we will be installing new drainage and AGL infrastructure, and resurfacing the runway.

London Southend Airport extend apologies for inconvenience caused to customers, but this is, we believe, the option which best fits the safety needs of the airport and least disruption overall to operators at the airport.

    2 Aug 18 - Alex Berry - London

Flew in to Southend from Denham on 1st Aug18 and ATC were most accommodating, they slotted us in behind an airbus with a couple of orbits in the circuit. Landed 23R with immediate exit via bravo to the north apron where a marshal was waiting. Donned the high-vis jackets and walked across the apron (eventually using the designated walkways!).

Headed towards the tower and the 'C' customs sign on the wall, easily visible from the north apron parking spot. When getting closer to the arrival point, there is a thick red line on the ground in front of you. If you do not pass the customs sign then you will not pass the red line. And if you do not pass the red line, then you will not need to go through International Arrivals i.e. luggage scanning and body search. There is a white door (unsigned) before the red line that you can go through, which makes it easier.

In any case, staff were great, landing fees were £28+vat so £33.60 incl. which for this kind of airfield I personally thought were reasonable, but since I did a local area afterwards as well, £67.20 for landing fees was relatively steep but acceptable given Thurrock was the next best alternative.

Didn't check the GA pilot facilities and used the phone to book out each time. Also didn't check out the restaurant in the hotel so can't comment on cafe/food options.

In all, a smashing experience to land at Southend, it's not overly complicated although I could certainly do with practicing my controlled airspace departure clearance read back proficiency; which I will. Hope this helps, if you're thinking of flying into EGMC sometime soon.
