Pilot reviews of Stornoway Airfield

1 Jun 14 - Nigel Reilly - Merley

I flew in from Fife airport on 26th May 2014 on a direct GPS track. I climbed to 6,500 feet for good terrain clearance and got traffic service from Leuchars 126.5 and then Scottish Mil on 134.3. I remained at 6,500 crossing The Minch and was cleared direct to finals for runway 36. I was directed to park on the Lower Apron where there are several concrete blocks for tying down. Paid £2.58 per litre for Avgas, and £16.79 for landing fee for my Cessna 150. Good ATC service and very helpful airport staff. We had a nice light lunch at the airport Cafe. Pre-booked with Stornoway Car Hire, 01851 702658 who came promptly with the car. Good briefing facilities on departure.

Visited on 16th April 2008, ATC were very helpful upon arrival telephoning to find us a bed for the night, it was surprising to find that some places were fully booked in April! We got a taxi from the small terminal which cost £7 into town where we stayed in a guest house. Same price back in the morning. Fuel is sold seperte from landing fees etc, and no VAT receipt, although i did not ask and only got a visa chit. If you get to Stornoway make the effort to fly up to the top of Lewis, (Butt of Lewis) and take a pic. of the lighthouse. Landing and parking for a C172 was under £20 for one night.

This is a big and busy airport with a rather impressive passenger terminal but the friendly welcome from all is more what you might expect from a small field - the guy on the info desk came all the way outside to show me where the bus stop was. Apparently there is usually hangarage available, although it was not when I visited but there were numerous concrete tie downs. There is a good bus service into Stornoway (pennies) and no need to pay for a very expensive taxi ride. There are numerous hotels and good restaurants in Stornoway and far more to see on the island than I had time for. I was pleased to be able to buy 100ll, although it is understandably expensive. ATC were extremely helpful with my flight plan on departure and I thoroughly enjoyed my visit.
