Pilot reviews of Stornoway Airfield
“ | I flew in from Fife airport on 26th May 2014 on a direct GPS track. I climbed to 6,500 feet for good terrain clearance and got traffic service from Leuchars 126.5 and then Scottish Mil on 134.3. I remained at 6,500 crossing The Minch and was cleared direct to finals for runway 36. I was directed to park on the Lower Apron where there are several concrete blocks for tying down. Paid £2.58 per litre for Avgas, and £16.79 for landing fee for my Cessna 150. Good ATC service and very helpful airport staff. We had a nice light lunch at the airport Cafe. Pre-booked with Stornoway Car Hire, 01851 702658 who came promptly with the car. Good briefing facilities on departure. ” |
“ | This is a big and busy airport with a rather impressive passenger terminal but the friendly welcome from all is more what you might expect from a small field - the guy on the info desk came all the way outside to show me where the bus stop was.
Apparently there is usually hangarage available, although it was not when I visited but there were numerous concrete tie downs.
There is a good bus service into Stornoway (pennies) and no need to pay for a very expensive taxi ride.
There are numerous hotels and good restaurants in Stornoway and far more to see on the island than I had time for.
I was pleased to be able to buy 100ll, although it is understandably expensive. ATC were extremely helpful with my flight plan on departure and I thoroughly enjoyed my visit.
