28 Aug 19 - Liam Sandie - Barnsley

Visited Strubby airfield on 28/08/2019 on a short flight from Netherthorpe (EGNF) in G-ROLY, a C172. This was again as a passenger while Lyndon built some hours to renew his SEP rating. A cold front was moving in from lunchtime so the 0.7 hour flight was ideal. PPR was a breeze to obtain from a very friendly Mervyn from the Pooleys plate and he explained how to gain access to the onsite facilities.

A nice flying morning and downwind right hand join followed from the north (gliders operate to the south and be careful not to confuse Strubby North with Strubby south which has a larger runway). The runways were both great and parking easy. The radio was not manned so blind calls were made. A motor glider was performing circuits to the south on our arrival.

We helped ourselves to drinks and snacks and later sent the landing fee and other monies via bank transfer electronically (a first for us in relation to landing fees but very useful!).

We could see push bikes available to borrow and we have since seen that a beach was only a few miles away so we will return soon enough we hope.

The return flight was via the east coast to look at some other airfields (Croft was one of them) from the air to plan future visits. We then routes via Mablethorpe, Spurn Point, Humberside and Doncaster Sheffield before a couple of circuits at Netherthorpe prior to the cold front settling in.

A great airfield with helpful PPR and very GA friendly.

Strubby North: Always wanted to go here, which I did on Thursday 25 July inbound from Fenland and outbound to Sturgate. No one there on my visit, but one of the members was mowing the parking areas (by tractor) and said hello. The clubhouse was accessible by keying in a code to a ‘key-box’ (emergency frequency) and opening up with the key. Great idea and allowed access to loo, tea, coffee, snacks, etc.

The runway was in really excellent condition and the grass parking spacious (and just mown!) Nothing much else there, but that is what I really like most of the time. Obviously close to Strubby gliding site, so keep your wits about you, but no problem as long as you plan to avoid the glider circuit.

First time visitor to Strubby over the Easter weekend. Runway & grass parking in good condition. Very friendly welcome from enthusiastic pilots/airfield owners with comfortable pilots lounge in mega-caravan. Beach is only 5miles away and they will have cycles available soon.

2 Dec 14 - Ruth Edwards - Retford (born Burnley!)

We visited Strubby twice this summer and received a warm welcome and an interesting tour of the aircraft in the hangars. All the members are friendly and pitch in to make the airfield work, the runway's in excellent condition, the clubhouse is well stocked and comfortable, whilst sitting outside in summer in peaceful surroundings is most pleasant.

Great place, everybody very friendly and helpful. Will certainly visit again.

The hangars to the side of the runway with a displaced threshold makes the approach to 26 interesting. A very small airfield so limited facilities but they do make an effort with a well stocked fridge. Maplethorp is not too far away by taxi.
