Visited Wellesbourne from Netherthorpe (EGNF) in G-ROLY a C172. This was another short winters flight and PPR was arranged with minimum fuss by phoning Wellesbourne ATC.
We routed at 3000ft via Nottingham and Leicester overheads before turning south west. Initially we had difficulty hearing Wellesbourne Information on the radio and this caused a little confusion as it was a busy day with many aircraft in the circuit and also joining into the overhead. We had to do a go around due to how busy it was but got in on the second attempt and paid the reasonable £15 landing fee in the tower.
Breakfast at the café was superb the place was extremely busy with locals, bikers and cyclists. Other airfields take note, this is how to run it for profit!
Fuel was obtained with minimum fuss as well.
It is a real shame this airfield looks set to destined to the history books to make way for housing as it is fantastic example of what UK GA is all about. We noticed some new builds already on the end of the runway, no doubt the occupants will be moaning about the noise in a few months!
The return flight was equally as pleasant and we are not sure why we have waiting so long to visit this great airfield. |

Visited last Sunday. What a friendly place. Telephoned the tower in the morning for PPR very accommodating. Wonderfully detailed & helpful website assisted greatly. Landed, parked up (plenty of space/options) and was pleasantly surprised that we even got a lift to the tower ! Foolishly we had forgotten our Hi Viz but was not an issue. They are very relaxed. Paid our £ 10 landing fee and grabbed a sandwich - which was brought to us outside promptly. Equally the plates were cleared away with similar efficiency whilst we spent a short time relaxing and watching the helicopters come and go. Strolled down to admire the Vulcan which is kept at the northerly end of the airfield before departing. It’s a good place to pop into or stop off. Well worth a visit.

Visited yesterday solo, it's a great destination for me, nice distance, hard runway, good canteen and friends in the area. I can't praise the airfield enough, they sent the bowser to my aircraft to save me a trip to the pumps and the fire truck gave me a lift to pay so I didn't miss my all day breakfast. The refuel saved me £30. Everyone I met, from the tower, fuellers, fire truck and canteen were very helpful, friendly and chatty. I will make it a regular trip. Brize zone was also very accommodating in the slightly tricky conditions, even allowing me a spectacular view of a C17 Globemaster turning final.

My first landing in my new a/c G-ERRY
From
John Ellard
5 Jul 11
I've bought an AA5B - G-ERRY - with 2 friends and flew her today for the first time from Elstree to Wellesbourne following her new ARC/Annual and rebirth after a long time as a groundling.
I'm new to the type so I had a top instructor (John B) and my good friend George who flew the return leg back to TR.
As someone used to more sedate aircraft I had my hands full and the landing was..an arrival really. But what a fabulous machine!
The picture is Wellesbourne Mountford rwy 18 imminent final!
If anyone has any tips about the AA5B please let me know. I am so impressed by the performance and handling but I think it might bite at times (wing drop near the stall was a bit harsh) so I would really welcome any advice.
I'm tickled pink though about being a new owner of this aircraft!!
John

Flew into Wellesbourne from Wycombe Air Park (routing via Silvertsone). Busy airfield with plenty to look at, great long runway and the chap on radio was a real gent. Slightly awkward moment in the cafe scrambling for cash as they don't take card, albeit any 'all day breakfast' which includes black pudding is a winner in my book!

Wellesbourne Mountford Autum afternoon
From
David C
6 Nov 10
Lovely clear day for a short bimble up from Kemble to Wellesbourne. Sunshine and great light effects in the autumn afternoon. Excellent AFIS from a busy controller handling lots of circuit and visiting traffic, so early radio calls advisable. The rising ground south of runway 36 can be deceptive but the circuit is straightforward. Bacon sandwiches are a real treat at the cafe which attracts many visitors and gives the airfield a friendly atmosphere. Very short wait before takeoff. Definitely worth a visit. Landing fee for single was 15.00.

We flew to Wellesbourne today, and were delighted to see the Vulcan testing is engines and taxiing about. Full credit to Wellesbourne and the FISO on duty, it was very busy, great fun with 3 of us on final and the Vulcan at the threshold. Nice outdoor seating and viewing area, with some nice food. My two kids and my girlfriend love it here. I've been before and will come again.

A Closer look at 36 as "Boris" slips it in.... ;c)
From
Steve Clarke
14 Nov 07
Taken at five o'clock in the evening on a slightly hazy afternoon in April.
Some say: He has a small dog called "Snowy" Some say: He is a part-time fireman. Some say: At the age of seventeen he beacame the youngest ever winner of the men's singles title at Wimbledon. Some even say: He once operated a bordello from a well known portakabin.
All we know, is that he flew a smooth enough approach for us to get this picture, and they call him "Boris"!
