“ | Not having visited Wellesbourne for a few years, I spent nearly three weeks there in August on a CRI course with On-Track, (what a great organisation and very highly recommended). A great airfield with a very good café which seems to cater for as many motorcyclists and cyclists as it does aircrew.
I got to see this airfield a little differently than usual, (although often from a classroom!), and it just seems a very friendly and welcoming place – I really enjoyed my time there. I hope that the planning issues get resolved soon: It seems that the locals and council are a major force to keep the airfield open, so hopefully, they are on-course to succeed.
Another airfield well worth a visit and which needs our support. ” |
“ | Flew in on Saturday 21st April with 2 pax, quite an uneventful join/approach and landing. ATIS were fine on the way in, but had me hold for ages on departure, when I could have gone easily in between the C150's and PA28's bouncing on and off the runway. When you're paying for chocks off/on.... it cost me an extra £30 on the hire for the 172 bad boy to be idling away waiting for Christmas! All in all a great little airfield but £20 for the landing fee seems a little high, I did know about the cost, but wanted to tick it off my 'visited airfields' sheet, not sure I'll be back though. ” |
“ | Flew into Wellesbourne today (Sunday 10th April) from Elstree via Turweston....lovely large airfield....busy both in the air and at the Café....to be honest I think the landing fee of £15 for a 4 seater is a bit high....
Glad we visited may return in the future.

“ | This is a great little airfield and is a hive of activity. The runway is nice and long (for a C42) the AFIS was really helpful and accommodating and the cafe was brilliant and had a good selection. The briefing facilities were not great but adequate and situated just below the tower. I will definitely be back in the future. ” |
“ | Flew in from Thruxton in a PA28. Despite it only being a Tuesday, the airfield was busy with all kinds of aircraft but the AFIS was very efficient and had it all under control. The terrace in front of the restaurant was packed with spectators. The restaurant serves fresh, no-nonsense food at sensible prices. Very friendly and efficient all round. This is how GA should be; it is inconceivable that this airfield should be under threat of closure. ” |
“ | Great airfield, have visited it many times. Why cannot all airfields be like this one. Good runways, nice controller in the tower, easy to get fuel and a great restaurant/café. Well done everyone ” |
“ | Flew to Wellesbourne today (02/08/13) and can only say positive things about this airfield! We flew from Peterborough Conington in our Grumman AA5 with basic service from Sywell and Coventry enroute, We were greeted by a very cheerful controller on Wellesbourne Info. Joined via the overhead for runway 18 with a Right hand circuit, we were told to report downwind. Nice landing just after the runway numbers and taxied in to park next to the new Tecnam single 2 seater. We were greeted by a chap called James who was on work experience and was made to feel welcome from the moment the prop stopped spinning. They don't seem to be too strict about wearing the old High Visibility jackets but take one just in case! Popped up to the tower to pay our landing fee of £15 which was more than fair. Back down the stairs and into the cafe, Ordered a full English breakfast and it was wonderful, one of the best I've ever had! and not too expensive! On Departure lots of locals were sitting on the benches outside of the cafe where lots of children were waving so I popped open the canopy and gave a nice big wave and a thumbs up, Beware of the noise abatement procedures so read up on these first! Very good experience at this field and I'll be back soon! ” |
“ | Visited Wellesbourne Mountford today (19th May 13) Good radio and very helpful. Busy day with lots of people making the most of unusual good weather. Runway top condition.
Café was very busy but service quick and friendly. Landing fees very reasonable for such a well kept and well run facility. If anyone is looking for a good place to visit this would be a great choice. ” |
“ | Visited the market on a Saturday morning - Was a little busy but ATC very cool/calm and friendly. ATC let us part right next to the market area and very friendly chap came out in a landrover to take the landing fee. Our second time to Wellesbourne and really enjoyable experience. ” |
“ | A great destination! Very close to Stratford upon Avon, Gaydon Heritage Motor Centre and Charlecote Park (beautiful National Trust house). At the airfield there's a varied collection of aircraft, including an Avro Vulcan, a museum and a fabulous cafe. A very friendly welcome and highly recommended. ” |
“ | I flew my wife and son into Wellesbourne Mountford from Thruxton, in a Grumman Cougar GA7 on 06/01/12 for the first time. I received a good service from Brize Zone while crossing their zone then joined downwind RH for RWY 18. Nice long runway in good condition. Landing fee cost £20 for a twin and i was able to get cash back to spend in the cafe on a large fry up! They do not take cards in the cafe but said they would take cheque. Good fry up for £5 and friendly service. Would fly there again but probably on a day when the museum is open. ” |
“ | Flew into Wellesbourne on the return leg of Westair’s fly-out to White Waltham. Sporting cross-winds due to a showery weather front made the landing interesting (especially from the back-seat where I was on this leg!), but the locals were as friendly as ever, a great café and very good advice from the AFIS on what was a very busy day.
The Vulcan (and a vampire T11 and prop-provost) all looked good too.
Interestingly enough, 05/23 was out of use on this day due to the open-air market. It did cross my mind that the airfield owners probably make more from this on one day than they do on landing fees in a month. Thank goodness they believe in aviation – and it puts the £15.00 landing fee into perspective.

“ | Flew to Wellsbourne from Fairoaks with 4 other aircraft as part of a club flyout. What a great place, fantastic smooth runway, AFIS was very helpful and cafe was good value, landing fees are £15 but well worth it. We opted to get a cab into Stratford upon Avon ( £15 ew). Wellsbourne and Stratford, a great places to visit, we will be returning, but not on a bank holiday!
Thank you and well done Wellsbourne.

“ | Dropped in for a spot of lunch after nearly 2 years since last visit. Glad to see things pretty much the same. Smiling faces in the tower. Good hearty food in the cafe, shame they don't sell their tea mugs anymore. Plenty of variation of aircraft airside and in the adjoining museum to visit.
Great chilli con carne! ” |
“ | Freiendly and busy airfield, very easy to spot.
Excellent restaurant, very busy when I visited bu worth the visit.
good runway and good ATC, easily coping with the volume of activity.
well worth a visit ” |
“ | I visited Wellsbourne on the 17th Oct from North Weald, routed via Bovingdon, Westcott and Daventry, Farnbrough Lars exceptionally helpfull with Traffick Service as really busy especially in the Halton area. The circuit was very busy as we approached, five in and another five joining, but the lady on the radio was very calm and capable, we parked up and ordered food and drinks, (sausage and bacon baguetts) which were brilliant, and good value. Wellsbourne is a great destination, very highly reccomended, and great to see the Vulcan on display. ” |
“ | I flew in to Wellesbourne on my qualifying cross-country. They were utterly charming. There was even some theatre as a helicopter landed and blew a refuelling plane around a bit. It was a Friday, heavily used, but the Tower was completely charming for a novice to join, land, run up and get his form signed, and be given an easy departure for Sywell. It might be all in a day's work for them, but they did it on that day with grace and charm. ” |
“ | Visited Wellsbourne today and its the nicest and most friendly airfield I have visited. Really well kept and very busy today considering it was a Monday. Great cafe and superb area outside overlooking the incoming and parked aircraft.
One of those places you wished you lived near so you could base there. Circuit details on website with other useful information.
On leaving we lined up behind 3 other aircraft for departure but departed within a few minutes of starting up.
Not commented on flight briefing as we didnt use or see them but would presume they are as good as the rest of the facilities.
Fabulous day, and superb weather for a change. Will be back and very soon and probably often.

“ | Sywell :- Last Saturday we set off to Wellesbourne, but the conditions were so turbulent (gusting 35kts) that all three of my passengers felt unwell, and my 3 year old son was quite ill. The closest airfield was Sywell, so I radio'd and explained the situation, they were extremely helpful and had a runway in to wind so we diverted straight in. On the ground the staff at sywell were very concerned about my little boy and even phoned up to the cafe to arange a free drink for him. I was offered cleaning materials to clean up any mess in the aircraft and given a great deal of sympathy - and no charge for the diversion landing. Thank you very much Sywell and all staff on duty, we arrived feeling miserable, and you cheered us up so that we all left feeling happy. ” |
“ | Flew into Wellesbourne for the first time today! I've always heard great things about Wellesbourne, so a cancelled fly out to the Isle of Wight was a great excuse to go to Wellesbourne! Fairly busy as usual, but the nice chap in the tower had obviously done this before, and AFIS was top notch! Time to try out the cafe! Food was first class - the best bacon sandwich of my life! It was more like mini gammon steaks, the bacon was thick, well cooked, and a generous portion size - particularly for the price! A nice outdoor patio area is available to sit, eat and watch the goings on of the airfield! Very nice and friendly staff throughout, from the cafe to the tower. The runway is of very good standard, is smooth, and looks like it has just been repainted or resurfaced!!
All in all, and excellent visit, and I shall definately be visiting Wellesbourne again - top notch! ” |
“ | Have flown in to Wellesbourne once during my training, and use it on a regular basis as a turning point on Navigation exercises.
FISOs are excellent, always taking time to slow things down for a student. Nice long runway, and a decent cafe too (but we only had a cup of tea so can't really comment on the food).
Definitely worth a visit. ” |
“ | Very busy but easy to find. Good AFIS but welcome was marred by tower "commander" biting my head off for using the self-service book-in facility when it was in fact manned (but in the loo....).
Great display of old bombers etc. and busy cafe. ” |
“ | Flew to Wellesbourne today for a very quick stop (15 minutes !), excellent AFIS in a busy circuit - 7 aircraft. Lovely runway and plenty of parking. AFISO was very helpful and friendly especially when at 200ft after takeoff my door popped open, blasting me with freezing cold air, my eyes were watering so much I could hardly see !. AFISO gave me the choice of runway 18 or 05, cleared other aircraft out of the circuit and even had the fire truck waiting for me. Many thanks to Wellesbourne airfield for an excellent service. ” |
“ | We flew in to Wellesbourne on Sunday 14th October. Very nice, friendly and pleasent staff. Excellent AFIS and wx briefing on the phone before we left Old Sarum. We only had a sandwich and cup of coffee so I can't really comment on the resteraunt facilities but there were lots of others having lunch and the kitchen was busy. Had to wait a little but they were obviously busy! Well worth a visit to see the Vulcan. ” |
“ | Bacon sandwiches!!!!...........lets face it, is it really what its all about?.......seven exams, fifty or so hours of training, night rating ? IMC ? ..........Any sauces sir with your amazing breakfast?......Wellsbourne......EGBW......1 KM hard runway. excelent Info service 124.025, fuel,...........my beloved GGYTO ( PA 28...2X Garmin 430!!! ), rented for £120.00 wet does it get better than this?..........it's all here, come and visit........... ” |
“ | Excellent and lively GA field, lots of activity, easy to find even with my somewhat questionable navigation skills.
If you need to stop somewher in this sector, its a good alternative to Coventry, which although it has excellent facilities has a bit too much of that "big airport" feel to it. Wellesbourne is friendly and more tailored to GA.

“ | friendly field sat and had a cup of coffee (awful) and a chat with locals beautiful setting and controller very precise that I clearly understood him ... recommended? yes worth a visit beautifull restaurant 2 miles from the field cost £30 per head but very good atmosphere and lovely quality ” |
“ | Braved the weather that didn't turn out as bad as expected and really glad I did.
Smashing airfield with plenty to interest the aviator - Chipmunks to Citations and a really friendly feel. Great service from FIS and restaurant. Thanks to all. ” |
“ | Absolutely cracking place to visit. Buzzing airfield right between Warwick and Stratford so plenty to see and do within a ten pound taxi ride.
Staff and AFIS bent over backwards to help us when we got rained in for an extra day, and one of the resident instructors even gave us a lift to a hotel. The full breakfast was top notch; there aren't many breakfasts for under a fiver that beat me into submission, but I met my match. Web and briefing facilities in the tower, and Birmingham quite happy to let you transit in and out. We'll be back! ” |
“ | I trained at Wellesbourne so I'm probably biased! Excellent airfield with plenty going on, yet not horrendously busy. There's a small museum (open Sundays) complete with bunker and a medium sized collection including a Yak 52 and a Vulcan nose section. There's also a complete, working Vulcan at the north-west end of the field which can be visited on Saturdays.
The jewel in the crown has got to be Terry's Touchdown Cafe - excellent hot food available nearly all day - and well used by both aviators and locals alike. Its good to see an airfield eatery which helps promote GA to the general public and let them enjoy what we enjoy! ” |
“ | Visited EGBW today. Very welcoming and efficient RT, directed me straight to my parking spot opposite the tower. Lively place even mid-week. Cafe was open and serving tasty food at a good price. Sat outside and watched the world go by. Well worth the visit anytime of the week. ” |
“ | Nice, busy GA field. Lovely little museum with lots to see, including a Vulcan nose section which you can clamber up into.
I visited for a fly-in and the museum had opened especially, manned by enthusiastic and well-informed individuals. The meal in the extremely busy café was worth waiting for, I had an enormous ham, egg and chips!
It was decidedly blustery day when we went and the FISO thoughtfully kept up a running commentary on the state of the gusting crosswind all the way down final. ” |
“ | A very busy airfield with a very helpful, friendly and welcoming team. The canteen is the best that I've come across on a GA field. A regular route of mine. ” |
“ | Went to Wellesbourne on 2nd January bank holiday and got great service from the lady in the tower; she gave a bang on description of the weather before we set off, was excellent when in the circuit and managed to get us out onto the runway when the first opportunity arose.
Also an excellent all day breakfast! Looks close enough to Stratford to make a day of it by cabbing in for a while too. ” |
“ | Flew in to Wellesbourne on the 5th as my first cross-country and to celebrate a birthday. Bit of a scarily small runway compared to my home one of Filton, but what a nice little friendly GA field! The cake was excellent, by the way. ” |
“ | I flew in to Wellesbourne last Monday on the first leg of my QXC. The welcome was very friendly from both the tower and the cafe. It's a bit of a hike from my two home airfields - Plymouth and Thruxton (I live in Plymouth and work in Andover) but well worth a visit it you are near the West Midlands. ” |
“ | Dropoped in last year for the UkGA flyin - arrived late as went Swansea, Old Buckenham, Wellsbourne then Swansea. Large airfield with a definite GA feeling. Under the East Midlands CTA so watch the height. Large runways with noise abatement. Good cafe and a couple of vulcans to look at. Would go again ” |
“ | Parked up 2 nights while visiting Stratford on Avon. Very friendly and helpful airfield, £10 landing fee and £5 per night for parking. Restaurant is good too.
Will definitely visit again. ” |
“ | Ok so i am a little bias as it is my flying base! But EGBW really is a fantastic airfield to fly from, come and visit! ” |
“ | Well, it's way over a year ago, but it was part of my QXC and I couldn't have wished for more, including a very nice lady FISO who classed my landing and airmanship as excellent. Just what a QXC student needs (with the possible exception of the broadcast air/ground radio - but hey, if you're expecting to get a FRTOL, you shouldn't nbe worried about more than the average number of people hearing you!). It's time I went back. ” |
“ | Super day yesterday so got the plane out and had a trip to Wellesbourne. As usual it was very pleasant with good ATC and a freshly made sandwich in the cafe. The point made earlier about the cafe being used by the wider public is a good one and hopefully helps the cause of GA. Just wish they had an into-wind runway! ” |
“ | We arrived too late for food, but I gather the fish and chips are excellent. Oh well, next time :-) ” |
“ | A very welcoming airfield with a super cafe which acts as a meeting point for aviators and the general public. With a couple of flight training schools and fuel readily available it's a super base for visiting nearby the historical towns of Sratford-upon-Avon and Warwick. ” |
