“ | Wing Farm is a very nicely maintained strip which is quite flat and no bumps that I can notice. It receives GA and Microlight and Glider traffic. It houses Galaxy Microlights which does mainatance and is the most active place on the airfield to visit and quite often you will be offered a cup of tea. If you have flown in and there is someone around they may be able to get you down the road to the 1 mile away petrol station for Unleaded. Nearest field for Avgas is Compton Abbas but sometimes there is a small amount of Avgas in a jerry can if you call Galaxy and ask beforehand. If nobody is about there is a Caravan near the booking in hut marked C. Landing fees are usually £3 for micrlight and slightly more for GA and Helis. There is no radio that will reply to you but its good to call on Safetycom to make sure people know you are there.
Proper toilets which also contain a clean working shower should you need it are next to the "C" cabin and they keys are inside the cabin. 1 mile walk down the road is a good food pub called The George Inn.
I have found quite often you can be cut infront of by gliders that wish to land etc and they will not be on radio so be very aware of this. Also whilst looking for the airstrip its common to be over the gliding site called "The Park" and there could be several soring turning gliders nearby who are non radio.
Some who have described Wing as hard to find will normally be best looking for the UFO glass building in the forest and then flying South East by 30 seconds and youll be over wing farm.
Circuits are normally to the South between the strip and the hill. Approaches for 27 come over trees so may serve you well to come in higher and sideslip off height to get in. The 09 runway has no such obstacles except the trees will be in your way on climbout.
Mark at Galaxy is a mine of information regarding repairs on aircraft and also has a computer if you need to check weather etc. Well worth a visit or as a cross country exercise. ” |
