New accommodation venture at Maypole Airfield
Inspired by Ruth Watson's commercial ideas on Channel 4's County House Rescue, the owners of Maypole Farm Airfield in Kent are planning to offer high quality tented accommodation for visiting pilots.
The airfield has enjoyed visits from many pilots over the years, who have pitched their own tent on the site, so the owners believe their accommodation plans could prove popular.
Pilots will be able to leave home without the added weight of their own tent, helping out with weight restrictions – and Maypole is even planning to provide a complete package including food to make the stay more enjoyable.
“We have done a lot of research on the internet and can’t find any other airfield that can offer anything like this,” says Sally Haigh, whose husband Andrew has visited UKGA's discussion forums to ask pilots what they think of the ideas.
“The feedback has been both positive and constructive,” says Sally. “Many thanks to all you guys who have helped us with this new venture, giving us your input as to what you would like and would expect.”
With the research complete, the couple has now purchased a brand new walk-around tent with four double bedrooms and a spacious communal area.
“We wanted to provide something a bit special, so we thought rather than sleeping bags, freshly laundered bed linen would be much more welcoming. Past experience has told us that we need to provide breakfast to our visitors, so that is also included in the package.
“Although we have a really great pub nearby which serves good food, we also thought that the pilots and their friends might prefer to do their own thing whilst enjoying the piece and quiet of the Kent countryside, so we have provided BBQ facilities as well.
“Will this be a success? I don’t know – but we flew into Calais today and met four pilots from Holland who have already booked with us! Fingers crossed!”
