British success at European Microlight Championships
The British Team has just returned from the European Microlight Championships with another haul of medals, despite some team members being dogged by mechanical difficulties. The championships were held at Castelo Branco in Portugal between the 31st of July and the 7th of August. Temperatures during the event rose to a very un-British 40°C, but the experienced Brits kept their cool to record some excellent results.
Gold Medal in the Weight Shift 2 seat class went to Pilot Robert Grimwood and Navigator Chris Saysell.
Dave Broom won the Silver Medal in the Fixed Wing single seat class, and Pilot Paul Dewhurst with Navigator and wife Dawn won the Silver Medal in the Fixed Wing 2 seat class (Paul is the reigning World Champion in this class).
Current Weight Shift single seat class World Champion Richard Rawes was only able to complete 4 out of the 13 tasks because of engine problems and so, unusually, finished outside the medals in a lowly 10th position.
Other results were: Simon Baker and Anita Holmes 8th in Weight Shift 2 seat class; Paul Welsh and Terry Weaver 5th, Nigel Beale and Eddie Clapham 7th and Richard Proctor and Simon Honeybourne 9th in the Fixed Wing 2 seat class.
The overall Team Result was a Bronze Medal for the British Team behind Gold Medal winners the Czech Republic, and Silver Medallists Spain. While delighted with the results achieved, we wonder what more might have been achieved if the 'gremlins' had not struck!
