Coventry Aeroplane Club to celebrate 80th birthday with 80 free flights

Coventry Aeroplane Club, one of the oldest flying clubs in the country, is set to celebrate its 80th birthday in style this year with an open weekend on 18-19th August at its clubhouse – during which 80 lucky people will enjoy a free flight.

Formed in 1932, the Club is also one of the longest established social and sports clubs in the Coventry and Warwickshire area, operating from its base at Coventry Airport on Rowley Road.

Free flights for 80 people

The highlight of the celebrations will see 80 people – representing the 80 years of the club's existence – on a short flight in a light aircraft, subject to weather conditions, so that they can sample flying at first hand. This is a chance to experience the pleasure of flying in a light aircraft and to see the superb facilities that are available to Club members at its Coventry Airport base.

Club members have generously offered their time and the use of their aircraft to provide these free flights and make the event possible.

Anyone interested in piloting light aircraft – either as an exciting new hobby or as a first step in a very rewarding career as an airline pilot – is invited to come along and join the celebration, meet the members and find out about the Club.

Trial flying lessons

Trial flying lessons will also be available for those who want to actually operate the controls of either a fixed wing aircraft or a helicopter, under the supervision of an experienced flying instructor. Subject to availability these can be flown on the day or at a suitable later date. Visitors will also be able to see, and book time on, the Boeing 737 flight simulator that has recently been installed in the club's hangar.

Celebrations will be held from 10.00am until 5.00pm on Saturday 18th and Sunday 19th August, with free flights enjoyed throughout both days – and specially-made 80th birthday cake for visitors.

The club has also invited some of its many friends to come and join in the party, including:

  • Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance
  • Colemans Office Supplies
  • Coventry Airport
  • Airport Fire Service
  • Flight Simulation Midlands
  • Steakout bar-cafe
