UK police given more powers over drones

According to the new measures, drone operators could also 'face an on the spot fine for failing to provide evidence that they have the correct permissions and exemptions if flying their device too high or too close to buildings, or failing to provide evidence of competency or registration".

In October 2019 the UK government published its 'Counter-drone' strategy, after a series of high-profile incidents in which drone sightings had affected air traffic flow at major airports.

Since November 2019 UK operators of small unmanned aircraft must register themselves and take an online competency test.

The measures are part of a broader legislative bill which will also prompt UK airports to 'modernise their airspace, delivering quicker, quieter and cleaner journeys', according to the Department for Transport.

Mark Dale .. high-profile incidents in which drone sightings had affected air traffic flow at major airports. NO. Alleged drone sightings. No drone has been proven to have been involved at Gatwick or Heathrow - nor in any of the 500+ 'drone airprox' reports.

Timothy Griffiths Well, I believe you Mark, but as an RC flyer I have had to do the test and frankly its not much bottle and very easy. But, it does mean that if someone is being an idiot at least the police now have no excuse not to act.
