Henlow Flying Club will close after MoD grounds flights from RAF Henlow

Henlow Flying Club are no longer able to train pilots or offer recreational flights from RAF Henlow after the airfield’s manager stepped down reports the BBC.

The MoD’s decision leaves the club “no option but to close” according to club director John Germanos.

The club initially hoped they would be able to continue flying at the site up to 2023 and possibly beyond due to the UK’s lack of airfields.

However, an MoD spokesperson has said that the government “remains committed to the phased drawdown and disposal” at Henlow which was first established in 1918.

Henlow is part of 15 sites that the MoD intends to sell off and there are plans to build 780 homes in its place.

Even though the club can stay on the site, it likely won’t stop them from closing.

“Stop us from flying and naturally we will fold,” said instructor Paul Tribble.

adrian Hayward I feel for the flying schools and clubs that have to close. Typical short sighted Government policies on aviation. It is so sad when such old historic airfields get closed to make developers rich and I doubt the houses will be "Affordable" either.

Clive Aitkenhead What we need is fewer people rather than more houses. Henlow is part of our heritage and its closure shows such a a lack of respect for our history.

Ron Parker As I understand it the Government want to maintain GA, or so Grant Schapps would have us believe. However I believe that the areas deemed suitable for house development (Brownfield sites) also include any airfield active or not. Where is the logic?

Ron Parker Well said Clive; "Lack of respect for our history". I may have to give up flying as my home airfield Wellesbourne is also on that list having lost its fight against impersonal owners. Very, very sad.

Duncan Bickley Short sighted government allowing the loss of yet more critical aviation infrastructure. Flying clubs are all being squeezed out of existence. There will be no suitable training airfields left in 10 years. Shapps - stop saying you support GA, ACT NOW.

Bev Webb Another nail in the coffin of GA, not helped by the - in my view - unnecessary restrictions on personal flying to implement personal exclusion during the Corona virus lockdown. I feel so sorry for those people in GA whose businesses/careers are being hit

Bev Webb I've just written to my MP urging him to lobby Grant Schapps about this. The MOD has an awful track record of bad decisions. This is another one. Lobby your MP!

Dave Cockburn I understand that Henlow has a new female CO and she has given all the club aircraft notice to get out with only 2 specific flying days when they are allowed to fly out. People there are desperately looking for alternative hangarage.
3 Apr 20
Dave Cockburn Needless to say the 'fly out' day have gone and some aircraft are still there
3 Apr 20
John Grant The present emergency due to Coronavirus should be forcibly pushed at the MOD. The drive to save/raise money by selling MOD real estate should be reviewed - we cannot predict where the next serious threat is to come from or what form it will take. The NHS

John Turnbull I have no conection with henlow as such, but as flyer I feel obliged to comment, this is what you get when a tin pot government is in power and grant shaps is as much use as an aeroplane without any wings, myself and others suffered when they closed our base

John Turnbull And built Nissan on it at sunderland and they have just demolished our ww1 lamilar GRADE 1 LISTED HANGAR ( which was in perfect condition I might ad) I fully understand the historic side of henlow,a friend of mine did his officer training at henlow

John Turnbull I can go on for ever about these things, but the sad fact is that non aviation people still look at us as the idle rich! when in reality the majority of us are the opposite because it costs so much to do what we all love (anyway I hope my comments can help

Deleted User Maybe the real reason for the sudden closing of the airfield BBC news - RAF Henlow has been earmarked as a temporary mortuary www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-beds-bucks-herts-52188146

Phil Acreman The MOD should hang their heads in shame. First they shut down the VGS now Henlow Flying Club. Well done MOD, you have single handedly taken the AIR out of Air Cadets and now stopped GA ,effectively destroying the owners business. What's next we ask?

Phil Acreman I would also like to add to John Turnbulls comment above. Most PPL holders are not rich playboys but ordinary working people. I am retired and still have to work to top up my pension. I have an abiding love of aviation. Shame on the MOD.
