Prototype of new amphibious Dornier Seastar completes first flight

For the 31 minute maiden flight the NG Seastar was crewed by a Dornier Seawings test pilot team commanded by Dornier’s Chief Test Pilot, Wolfram Cornelius.

Seastar SN1003 had attained the required approvals from EASA on 19 March, a major milestone for the program.

The New Generation Seastar is significantly improved from the original Seastar, which was designed and developed by Claudius Dornier Jr. in the 1980s.

The aircraft is equipped with a state-of-the-art full digital glass cockpit, new highly efficient propellers, several new systems including air-conditioning and stern thruster.

It has a corrosion-resistant composite structure that results in reduced maintenance, particularly in sea water operations.

It also has a maximum takeoff weight of 5,100kg, a maximum cruise speed of 180kt and a range of 900nm.
