As a member of 714 Squadron ATC, I stayed at RAF Colerne between 6th & 13th August, 1958. I still have my Record of Service which specifies flights taken and rifle shooting during that week. Whilst we were expecting to fly in Avro Hastings aircraft, they were fully loaded in readiness for the Aden crisis at the time. I took a photo a copy of which is attached. It is of poor quality but nonetheless does record a significant moment.

Back at Bembridge
Having visited last in November 2017 a return visit was overdue. Website details are unchanged from my previous review and a prompt email acknowledgement confirmed we had successfully PPR'd.
On coasting out from the mainland a radio call was made to "Bembridge Radio" but it was evidently unattended. A helpful local pilot explained that calls should be made to "Bembridge Traffic" instead - effectively everyone approaches, departing or in the circuit needed to contribute to overall situational awareness.
As is often the case, 3 aircraft converged shortly after 12 noon, presumably all in search of the $ 100 hamburger (as the Americans are accustomed to calling their flights - not for the cost of the food but the cost of the fuel to get there and back).
On a Wednesday in February, The Propeller Inn Pub is open (effectively it is on the airfield) and is really very nice - lunch is around a tenner per head and they will also take a separate (cash) landing fee which goes in an envelope.
The tarmac runway 12 is a pronounced downhill gradient and it is worth noting that the adjacent grass is full of ruts, with some mole hills and small depressions - so take care when taxi-ing around the grass - it's all perfectly manageable - just keep your momentum up (the grass is long) and your speed down. More farmers strip on the grass than a manicured aerodrome surface.... it is after all the Isle of Wight !

I had to make a wx diversion into Wattisham nearly 2 years ago. They were brilliant, used their ILS and left the aircraft there overnight, all no charge and extremely helpful.

The new flying school which recently opened here October 2018 has plenty to offer, delivered by passionate and professional instructors lead by Stephen Evans who is extremely dedicated and knowledgeable. If you wish to learn how to fly Stephen's teaching technique is one that truly works, he commits his time and makes every effort to help.
The facilities will not disappoint, the school is equipped with the latest learning materials and technology including a flight simulator, the training aircrafts are in pristine condition with fantastic visibility, the airfield layout enhances your learning experience as everything is on a larger scale!
Highly recommend Fly Snowdonia www.flysnowdonia.com it’s well worth the visit for flight training, pleasure flights or simply to enjoy the breathtaking scenery that Llanbedr has to offer.
The Cafe is known to have a good reputation offering decent size portions good value for money and a friendly and pleasant atmosphere.

As I entered the door on my first visit to Llanbedr Flight School ( www.flysnowdonia.com ) I was highly impressed by the professional layout of the flight school with many educational posters and whiteboards on view. Stephen Evans greeted me with a cup of coffee and he described the many benefits, for someone wishing to learn to fly, at Snowdonia Flight School.
The school not only provides excellent flying lessons with knowledgeable and experienced pilots in the most beautiful part of Wales, but the classroom setting and books along with invaluable tutoring provides an all round package for a future pilot.
Stephen Evans runs a friendly, knowledgeable and ideal place to learn to fly and I would strongly recommend Fly Snowdonia.

Snowdonia Flight School came into operation in October 2018, unfortunately the previous owner of FlyLlanbedr is refusing to remove his website stating Llanbedr flight school is closed and Llanbedr is closed for GA.
To avoid any confusion, Llanbedr is open for GA and there is a new flight school in operation. Please consult website: www.flysnowdonia.com. The school offers ground school, PPL and LAPL training at one of the most picturesque flying regions you ever see. The school also has a state of the art simulator, furthermore the airfield is very GA friendly with a great cafe and is going through a significant refurbishment and is receiving strong levels of investment. Please visit.
The airfield offers 3 of the flattest runways you will ever see and they are in excellent conditions, it’s a crime not to make use of this hidden gem.

I am a Self Launching Motor Glider Pilot and wanted to visit the airfield by road initially as I was staying locally at the Hotel Endsleigh some 15 drive minutes away.... It's one of those hotels where if you have to ask how much, you probably want to search out any other option (probably in/around Tavistock) because it will be cheaper (but it costs nothing to window shop or in the case of the hotel grounds, visit their gardens for a more modest fee and tea) :
On to the airfield. Dartmoor Gliding Society's website is very helpful - however powered pilots might want to stop reading (or give them a call) as the club is inside the Dartmoor National Park boundary powered aircraft can only be accommodated by prior arrangement.
According to their website :
The club is located 3 nm north of Tavistock at co-ordinates 50 35.531N 004 09.100W grid reference 24780 07915.
A radio watch is maintained on 130.105 on normal flying days.
There is a single grass runway orientated 11 - 29 approx. 1100m long.
Circuits are flown on both sides of the runway.
This is a grass field with Skydemon advising the runways are in fact 10 - 28 but what's ten degrees between friends and glider pilots ?
What Skydemon does not show is the curvature of the airfield which is akin to an inverted dinner plate, i.e. sloping at both ends. Therefore taking off would entail an uphill run of 50-150 + metres (depending on how much field one elects to use).
No problem for gliders on a winch using 100 meters of the central flat part of the airfield but for all other aircraft one to carefully think about.
Grass runways are putting green smooth in some places - mainly in the central flat section, but rutted along the length of the runway in others due to gliders landing on wetter days. There are some hollows which would cause some bouncing on take off - but no different from say Shoreham's airfield surface. The best quality surface (and shortest grass) is to be found on the south side of the runway immediately adjacent to the stoney, gravel track (which is the width of a car). Essentially this is a grass airfield landable anywhere for gliders or those operating out of farm strips.
There isn't much infrastructure, but glider pilots are friendly helpful folk (although none were around midweek in January) so it would be a nice place to visit by air rather than my wintry visit by road.
If they let you fly in, perhaps asking for a trial flight (first ?) in a glider over Dartmoor would seal the deal (and supplement their coffers). This is exactly the sort of grass strip all aviation should be supporting. Lovely part of the world.
