Flew into Conington on 27 October to take the greyhounds for a walk. It's been five years since we were last here, but the airfield and café were as friendly as ever.

After refuelling, we had to park on the grass behind the club house because, although this was a Friday in October, the aircraft parking and café were absolutely heaving. (Mind you, it was one of those superb autumn days when it would have been rude not to fly if you had the chance!)

As before, we went for a walk and the roads and paths were nice and quiet. The dusk/night flight back to Blackpool finished off a truly lovely visit. Conington is a great destination with reasonable prices, a GREAT café and very friendly. Highly recommended.

Visited Sleap on 15 October to take the greyhounds for a walk. We’ve visited many times before and always find it a very charming location, although it can get VERY busy at weekends with aircraft arriving from all directions. The café is excellent and does some of the nicest bacon butties going as well as a lovely Earl Grey tea. My idea of heaven is sitting outside the control tower, overlooking the airfield with a bacon butty, a cup of tea, the smell of newly mown grass, the sight of the Welsh hills in the distance and lots of aircraft (including an Avro Anson on our latest visit) in the circuit – well, does life get better than this?

On previous visits, I’ve been to the Aircraft Recovery Group museum adjacent to the control tower. The museum is incredible and it’s like a ‘Tardis’ inside – so much to see and very well worth a visit. Without a doubt, Sleap is one of my favourite airfields and, being only a 35 minute flight from Blackpool, one that I (and the greyhounds) never tire of visiting.

Flew into Elvington on Monday 9 October to visit the excellent Yorkshire Air Museum (YAM). PPR was easy: a quick call to the mobile number in the AFE guide and advice that there would be no-one at the airfield and that YAM would collect the landing fee. From Blackpool I asked for and got a VFR transit across Leeds zone which gave a great view of the city.

The runway is over 3,000 metres long, (and harder to spot than you would expect – or maybe that’s just me!), although there is a shorter section ‘marked’ roughly in the middle. I just landed nearest to the museum after making blind calls to the A/G and saved a few minutes taxiing time. (No one else there when I arrived anyway). Parking was as directed in my PPR call next to the Buccaneer. Now that the 49 acre parking area is fenced off for non-aviation use, there is actually only a relatively small amount of parking, but it was plenty enough and only a two minute walk to the museum. The YAM itself is outstanding and in four hours I still didn’t have enough time to take in all the exhibits. The NAAFI at the museum was excellent and did a great selection of good food. All in all, the visit was a great one and I cannot recommend it highly enough. (NB – comments and scores for this airfield include the facilities and café at YAM – there really is nothing other than the runway at the airfield itself).

Flew into Turweston on Sunday 8th October with my wife - new airfield in the logbook.

Low cloud so joined downwind at 1000' (which I think everyone was doing). Busy when we arrived, but as soon as we & a couple of others had landed - nothing!

Helpful radio - although level 3/4 on approach to airfield.

Good parking and have to say the "new" tower is impressive.

Cafe was a delight, good chicken subs and drinks. Missed out on the roast beef & trimmings.

Didn't check the briefing facilities or fuel availability.

All in all one to come back to again on a nice summer's day
