Visited Strubby airfield on 28/08/2019 on a short flight from Netherthorpe (EGNF) in G-ROLY, a C172. This was again as a passenger while Lyndon built some hours to renew his SEP rating. A cold front was moving in from lunchtime so the 0.7 hour flight was ideal. PPR was a breeze to obtain from a very friendly Mervyn from the Pooleys plate and he explained how to gain access to the onsite facilities.
A nice flying morning and downwind right hand join followed from the north (gliders operate to the south and be careful not to confuse Strubby North with Strubby south which has a larger runway). The runways were both great and parking easy. The radio was not manned so blind calls were made. A motor glider was performing circuits to the south on our arrival.
We helped ourselves to drinks and snacks and later sent the landing fee and other monies via bank transfer electronically (a first for us in relation to landing fees but very useful!).
We could see push bikes available to borrow and we have since seen that a beach was only a few miles away so we will return soon enough we hope.
The return flight was via the east coast to look at some other airfields (Croft was one of them) from the air to plan future visits. We then routes via Mablethorpe, Spurn Point, Humberside and Doncaster Sheffield before a couple of circuits at Netherthorpe prior to the cold front settling in.
A great airfield with helpful PPR and very GA friendly.
